Chelsea

Chelsea should avoid a move for this £40.5m-rated reported January target at all costs – agreed?

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were very excited when they heard rumours, emanating from Transfer Market Web, that their side could move for Roma star Radja Nainggolan this month. It’s certainly a move that, on the surface, is exciting – given his fantastic quality in the midfield – but our landlord is of the opinion that the Blues should avoid a move at all costs.

After all, you only have to look at the apparent context behind Chelsea’s interest to recognise that a move for him would be bad news. He was recently dropped by Roma for his actions off the field, with the club unhappy with the questionable way in which he brought in the new year. At a club like Chelsea, you cannot afford to have these personal problems. Not only does it cause issues with sponsors and with brand image, but more importantly, it will affect his quality on the field. If you’re a professional athlete, you can’t be engaging in smoking and drinking, and so Conte should be very wary – not interested.

What’s more, it’s also tough to see quite where he would fit into the Chelsea first team. N’Golo Kante is, at this point, undroppable, whilst Cesc Fabregas has flourished this season. That leaves one spot free, and that’s likely to be taken up by one of Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater or Tiemoue Bakayoko. It seems unnecessary to throw another midfielder into the mix, especially one that will demand such a hefty fee. He’s rated at £40.5 million by Transfer Markt, after all.

Let’s not forget, too, Nainggolan will be 30-years-old by the time next season rolls around, and so it’s not even like he will outlast any of his midfield rivals. Furthermore, where would his signing leave the future of Ruben Loftus-Cheek? It would simply be a waste for the Blues.

When you consider all of these points together, a move for Nainggolan simply makes no sense for Chelsea – agreed?
