Chelsea stumbled past a spirited Watford side yesterday to keep some sort of pressure up on the top clubs in the Premier League, but ultimately so far, it’s not been an overly impressive showing domestically by the champions.
Antonio Conte appears to have struggled to get the balance right with the club now back in Europe, and so far they have looked vulnerable at the back and not quite the force of last term going forward.
However, a returning Eden Hazard has helped matters of late, while Alvaro Morata’s injury was not as bad as first feared.
Our landlord here in the Tavern though thinks Chelsea need to go out and make a big statement signing in January, and one man he thinks they can snatch from under the nose of Barcelona is Liverpool and Brazil star Phillippe Coutinho.
The little playmaker is now back in the Reds’ line up and looks every bit the quality player we all saw him as last term. His ability as a number ten or even slightly deeper as a number eight make him one of the most feared attacking midfielders in the league, and at a club like Chelsea he could be superb.
While he might have his heart set on a move to the Nou Camp, a move to Chelsea and the chance of mounting serious challenges for titles and trophies could well appeal to Coutinho. Liverpool will be determined to keep him, but Chelsea have the funds and backing, and he would be a superb marquee signing for the club.
