The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned that their failure to qualify for the Champions League this season could ultimately lead to the departure of Eden Hazard after 6 seasons in West London.
Chelsea’s Belgian magician has been an indispensable member of the first-team squad since he arrived at Stamford Bridge from Lille in 2012, however, without the prospect of Champions League football it seems perfectly plausible that he will leave the club this summer. Considering Hazard has been central to the club’s success in recent years, it would be unfair to expect any player to immediately fill the void he would inevitably leave – especially in the current transfer market which is characterised by heavily inflated prices.
However, Chelsea would have to sign someone to ease the burden associated with Hazard’s departure, and one man who could potentially become available is Paris Saint-Germain’s Angel Di Maria. According to El Larguero (via Cadenaser), Atletico Madrid representatives are in talks with the French giants over the potential of signing the Argentinian winger this summer, but that should not prevent the Blues from making a rival bid.
Di Maria (valued at £36 million by Transfermarkt) flopped at Old Trafford following his big-money move from Real Madrid in 2014. His failure to perform in the Premier League during a one-year stint with the Red Devils is certainly a worthy cause of concern for the Chelsea supporters propping up our bar, but his record in France strongly suggests that he was performing well below his true level at Man United.
In 133 appearances for PSG, Di Maria has managed to scored 50 goals and provide 55 assists, however, first-team opportunities have been harder to come by since the arrival of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Chelsea could rectify that issue for Di Maria following Hazard’s departure, so a transfer which saw the 30-year-old swap Paris for London could prove to be a desirable one for all parties concerned.
Chelsea will be desperate for Hazard to stay at the club beyond the end of the season, but if they are forced to wave goodbye to one of the best players in their history this summer, the signing of Di Maria could prove to be a shrewd replacement despite his previous struggle in the Premier League.
