Chelsea should land £18m-rated free-agent to replace Cesc Fabregas this summer

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been disappointed with their side’s tepid defence of the Premier League title this season and, as such, they are hoping to see a handful of new players arrive once again this summer.

Roman Abramovich was more than generous in funding Chelsea’s dip into the transfer market last summer as five players arrived in big-money deals prior to the beginning of the season, but their shortcomings this season prove that money does not guarantee success in the Premier League. However, recent reports from Germany suggest that the Blues may not have to spend a penny to land a rising star in European football who possesses the potential to eventually replace Cesc Fabregas at Stamford Bridge.

Max Meyer (valued at £18 million by Transfermarkt) has long been subjected to speculation linking him with a move away from Schalke, and his future was finally put into some sort of clarity by his club as they officially confirmed he will depart when his contract expires this summer via their official Twitter page. The German international will certainly have plenty of potential suitors lining up to lay a lucrative contract on the table, but if Chelsea can fend of interest from elsewhere they would be taking a great stride towards replacing Fabregas in the long-term.

Fabregas still has plenty to offer the Blues, but at 30-years-old the club need to consider a handful of players who could eventually succeed him, and Meyer certainly fits the bill. The 22-year-old established a reputation for his ability to operate in a number ten role during the early stages of his career, however, he has dropped deeper into midfield this season to operate in-front of the back-four.

The decision to deploy Meyer as a deep-lying play-maker has paid dividends so far as his performances have played a key role in Schalke’s climb into 2nd place in the Bundesliga this season. Meyer’s range of passing and immense composure when receiving the ball in tight areas make him an ideal candidate to dictate tempo from deeper in midfield, and alongside Kante Chelsea would have a finely balanced midfield partnership.

It’s too early to compare Meyer to a player of Fabregas’ quality and experience, as he still has plenty to prove in European football, but the early signs suggest he possesses a skill-set which would enable him to replace the Spanish maestro in the long-term, so Chelsea should do everything they can to grab themselves a bargain free transfer this summer.
