Chelsea should land £45m-rated full-back if Marcos Alonso joins Barcelona this summer

The Chelsea supporters in the Transfer Tavern have plenty of reasons to be concerned right now, and recent reports regarding the future of Marcos Alonso have provided them with yet another worry ahead of the summer transfer window.

Antonio Conte’s side look destined to finish outside the top-four this season, and if that proves to be the case then the club could be set to undergo a significant change in personnel. The likes of Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois could be tempted into moves away from the club if they have no hope of playing Champions League football next season, but they are not the only players who the Blues faithful need to be worried about.

According to reports from Goal, Barcelona have identified Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso as a surprise long-term replacement for Gerard Pique, depsite the fact he has predominantly operated as a left-wing-back during his career at Stamford Bridge thus far. If Barcelona do indeed come calling for the Spanish full-back this summer then it will certainly be difficult for him to resist the natural lure and charm of the Catalan giants.

If Alonso eventually departs the club to join Barcelona then Chelsea will need to sign a new left-back during the summer window. The Blues are set to welcome Kenedy back to the club at the end of the season following his loan spell at Newcastle, but the quality of his performances at left-midfield suggest his attributes are naturally suited to an advanced role rather than a defensive one.

With that in mind, Chelsea will have to splash the cash on a replacement for Alonso, and the man who should be at the top of their shortlist is Alex Sandro of Juventus. Sandro (valued at £45 million by Transfermarkt) has been on Chelsea’s radar since the beginning of the season according to various reports, but so far their interest hasn’t been backed up with an official bid for his services.

That simply has to change in the summer if Chelsea wish to adequately replace Alonso and ensure they return to the Champions League next season. Quite simply, the Brazilian is one of the best left-backs on the continent, and his impact at Stamford Bridge would certainly instigate an improvement in the overall quality of Chelsea’ performances next season.

Losing Alonso would be a huge blow on the back of a bitterly disappointing season for the club, but the disappointment will be short-lived if they are able to replace him with Alex Sandro in the summer.
