Chelsea should launch a move for this £31.5m-rated defender – it just makes sense

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are keen for their side to bring in some more defensive depth this summer…

The Blues’ squad depth is very limited at present, and no area is worse off than the defence. On the flanks, Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso are Conte’s only real options, whilst things aren’t much better in the middle.

Sure, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are both decent depth options, but they aren’t experienced enough to be called upon regularly in the biggest games, and so Conte would be wise to bring in one more option in the middle.

The Sunday Times reported (via the Sun) over the weekend that the Blues were keen on a move for Toby Alderweireld of Tottenham, even deciding to inquire on his availability. Indeed, whilst the move may be considered audacious and unlikely, it could prove to be a stroke of genius from the Blues.

After all, Alderweireld is one of Europe’s best defenders, and his consistency in the Premier League has been nothing short of incredible. Forming a key part of arguably the Premier League’s best defence, the Belgian is as solid as they come both in the air and on the pitch – making him perfect for the Chelsea defence.

At 28-years-old, he has so many years of experience behind him, and the fact that he has played at the highest level in the Premier League is hugely significant too.

On a personal note, the Belgian, who is rated at £31.5m by Transfer Markt,  would be able to earn far more money at Stamford Bridge, whilst Chelsea’s proven track record of winning trophies could also attract him.

Of course, it would be a difficult deal to make happen, especially with Daniel Levy in charge, but a move makes so much sense.
