The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were shocked when they heard reports that the Blues were keen on Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater…
The Englishman had a poor campaign last term, and given the nature of the English football fan, most supporters have chosen to forget the incredible job he did for the Foxes during their title winning campaign in 2016.
Despite his poor form last term, our landlord has thought long and hard about this story all day long, and he has come to a conclusion – he thinks that Danny Drinkwater, who is rated at £7.65m by Transfer Markt, is perfect for Chelsea.
The main counter argument to his arrival would draw on his poor form last year. Granted, he really struggled in the last term – but so did Leicester City as a whole. It’s very difficult to perform when your whole team is struggling – just look at Eden Hazard during the 2015/16 campaign. What’s more, in the year prior, Drinkwater was one of the Premier League’s best players – so there is no doubting his ability.
You also have to consider the role that he would play under Conte. He wouldn’t be a regular by any means, but he would be a reliable hand to play backup to the likes of Fabregas, Bakayoko and Kante going forward.
Kante, in particular, is an interesting player in this context – as Drinkwater formed a fantastic connection with the Frenchman at Leicester City, offering another reason for fans to be excited.
Significantly, he is also homegrown, and Chelsea’s quota of such players certainly must be considered given the lack of homegrown talent currently at the club.
Indeed, no matter which way you spin it, a move for Drinkwater makes sense. It might not be very exciting, but he is reliable.
