The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are encouraged by recent reports which have linked their club with a summer move for Anthony Martial.
Although he has been guilty of inconsistency throughout his Man United career, Anthony Martial (valued at £58.5 million by Transfermarkt) has proven he is one of Europe’s most promising young players since he completed a move to Old Trafford in the summer 2015. Whilst predominantly operating in a left-wing or inside-forward role, the French international has dazzled opponents with a combination of pace, balance and trickery, but yet he has failed to hold down a regular starting berth under Jose Mourinho.
The presence of the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Marcus Rashford certainly makes life difficult for Martial, and ultimately the intensity of the competition for first-team places could lead to his departure this summer. According to The Guardian, Chelsea are interested in bringing Martial to Stamford Bridge and are monitoring his situation in Manchester ahead of the transfer window.
Chelsea’s interest is completely understandable given Martial’s potential to thrive in the Premier League, but the fact the Blues and the Red Devils are top-four rivals could prove to be a decisive stumbling block in negotiations between the clubs. However, every player has their price and Chelsea could persuade United into a potential deal by tabling a cash plus player offer in the summer.
The player in question would be Pedro – a player who has struggled to live up to expectation since he moved to Chelsea from Barcelona in the summer of 2015. At 30-years-of-age, Pedro’s importance to Chelsea is undoubtedly diminishing, so the club should have no qualms about using him as a bargaining tool to lure Martial to West London.
Whether Martial would even be enticed by the prospect of moving to a club who cannot offer him Champions League football next season remains to be seen, but if there is even a sniff of an opportunity for Chelsea to sign Martial then it’s one they simply have to take, so they should use Pedro as a makeweight to increase their chances of completing an unlikely deal.
