Chelsea should offer Willian in massive swap deal for attacker who cost £54 million

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are expecting plenty of changes at the club this summer, but one player they will be eager to keep hold of is their Brazilian magician Willian.

Chelsea’s most recent campaign was one which was characterised by a desperate struggle for form and a toxic atmosphere between Antonio Conte and the club’s hierarchy. It’s difficult to separate Conte’s brazen criticism of his superiors and Chelsea’s struggle for form, but the fact they managed to end the season with an FA Cup victory added a silver lining to an otherwise disastrous campaign.

Although he has previously been criticised by supporters in the past, there’s no doubt that Willian stepped up to the plate and delivered plenty of fine performances for the club last season, but there is reason to suggest that Chelsea should offload him this summer.

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Chelsea are interested in signing Anthony Martial from Manchester United, but they will struggle to secure his signature because the Red Devils are unwilling to sell to a Premier League rival, however, Willian could alter that particular stance.

United have previously been linked with a summer bid for Willian, which is hardly surprising considering he has worked under Mourinho’s leadership before and his hard-working style of play is well aligned with the Portuguese manager’s defensive philosophy.

With United reportedly interested in signing Willian, Chelsea should offer him to the Red Devils in order to complete a deal for Martial. Although the short-term effect of a potential swap might not be in Chelsea’s best interests, it’s certainly a deal which would benefit them in the long-term future.

Martial has demonstrated an immense level of potential in sporadic bursts since he joined United from Monaco in 2015 in a deal worth £54 million (according to Transfermarkt), but thus far he has been unable to reach his pinnacle on a consistent basis. However, if Chelsea’s manager is able to bring the best out of the France international, they will certainly have a potential world beater on their hands.

With offers likely to be forthcoming for Martial’s services from abroad, Chelsea will need to make an offer which stands out from the rest, and using Willian as bait to secure his services could be a necessary step to take to force through a potential deal.
