Things have fallen apart somewhat at Chelsea this season, with Antonio Conte’s men failing in their quest to retain their Premier League crown – much to the frustration of our resident Blues.
Clearly, then, things need to change this summer, but our landlord thinks that they may have to go backwards, before they can go forwards. One thing that characterised Chelsea during their most successful period – the 10 years following Roman Abramovich’s arrival – was the presence of leaders. Players like John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole led the dressing room to glory almost every season.
That’s what they’re lacking now, and this summer, they should look to remedy that. Unfortunately, many of these former players are either retired or are otherwise engaged – but our landlord thinks that Petr Cech could be a great option.
Rated at £5.4 million by Transfer Markt, Cech is looking likely to be replaced at Arsenal this summer, given his poor recent form. The 35-year-old hasn’t been at his best this season, and whilst that can be put down to age, it’s also pretty clear that Cech hasn’t been able to hit the heights of his Chelsea days since leaving the club.
As such, perhaps a return could bring him back to his heyday, allowing him to play as the perfect understudy to Thibaut Courtois. Of course, the former Chelsea man was forced out after being replaced by Courtois, but given that he’s now entering the twilight of his career, perhaps he may be happy to play second-fiddle now. A duo of Courtois and Cech would, undoubtedly, be amongst the strongest goalkeeping units in England.
However, whilst he could do a job on the pitch, his real role will come in the dressing room. The leadership and experience he could provide, alongside the respect that he will demand, could be huge for Chelsea. You can’t win anything with inexperienced players, and whilst Cech wouldn’t solve the problem – he’d certainly offer Chelsea a helping hand.
Chelsea made a mistake by getting rid of so many of the old guard so quickly, and they’ve now paid for that mistake in their poor form this term. Cech could be the man to steady the ship.
