At present, all eyes at Chelsea are looking towards Maurizio Sarri. The Italian is struggling at the helm of the Stamford Bridge outfit, and things don’t seem to be improving.
In fact, Chelsea have gotten worse over the course of the season in recent weeks, and as always at Stamford Bridge, the manager pays the price for the poor performances of the players.
However, in defence of Sarri, it’s clear that the Chelsea squad needs improving. That’s not to void Sarri of blame, of course, but it’s vitally important to recognise that the Chelsea team is far worse personnel-wise than it was a few years ago, owing to a run of poor investment from the club.
That means that, regardless of who is the Chelsea manager next season, investment in the team is needed, and a few major signings are required for Chelsea to have any chance of getting back to their best.
Chelsea are, of course, under the threat of a transfer ban, but according to Liam Twomney of ESPN, an appeal is likely to mean that any ban wouldn’t be in place before the summer window comes to an end; giving Chelsea this summer to do their business.
With that said, Chelsea must sign these 2 players this summer to regain Premier League dominance…
Chelsea have lacked a genuine solution to their attacking problems since Diego Costa departed the club and Gonzalo Higuain isn’t the option they require.
He’s already in his 30s, and in recent weeks, the Argentine hasn’t been able to have the desired impact – barring a couple of goals against Huddersfield. Olivier Giroud, meanwhile, hasn’t really been able to prove himself as a solid option either. He’s just too inconsistent.
Mauro Icardi is undeniably one of Europe’s best strikers, and he’d certainly be an upgrade for the Blues. He had a career-high return of 29 league goals last season, and it’s fair to say that at present, he’s probably the best option that Chelsea could go for.
Sure, he’s a fairly controversial figure – he was recently stripped of the Inter Milan captaincy – but sometimes that is what Chelsea need. There’s a real lack of personality in the Chelsea squad at present, and he clearly has a strong persona.
It makes little sense risking a move for someone less expensive. Chelsea need guaranteed results, and Icardi is the sort of player that could provide them.
Chelsea’s wingers are growing older, specifically, Pedro and Willian, and both players have suffered from significant downturns in form so far this season.
Both have regularly featured, but that’s only been the case because Maurizio Sarri has had a lack of depth, at least as far as experienced options go.
Pepe has been fantastic for current team Lille this season, having bagged 16 goals and 8 assists so far this term.
He’s a natural on the right-hand side of the attack, which is an area in which Chelsea have struggled to find a solution over the years, and he could be deadly alongside Eden Hazard.
Just like Hazard is able to cut-in on the left, Pepe is able to do the same on the opposite flank. He’s naturally left-footed, and so instead of Willian serving as a square peg in a round hole, Pepe is a natural on the right.
Goals, assists, a sustained offensive threat – what’s not to love?
