Chelsea simply don’t need to sign this highly-rated 24-year-old – here’s why

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern want to see a few new signings this summer, but according to our landlord, they should avoid signing a defender at all costs…

The Blues have been linked with a host of targets in recent weeks, with a Roma raid for Antonio Rudiger the latest to be reported in the British press, but perhaps Antonio Conte should begin to look at what he already has within his ranks.

The trio of David Luiz, Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta have impressed this season, and whilst improvement is always necessary, Conte would find it very difficult to displace the trio. What’s more, Conte also has Nathan Ake, Kurt Zouma and Ola Aina in reserve,  whilst Andreas Christensen is to return from a two-year loan in Germany at the end of the year – highlighting just how much depth they’re going to have.

A £70m double raid of Roma would suggest that at least £30 million of that is being put towards Antonio Rudiger’s signing – and that is a lot of money on someone that is not guaranteed to start. After all, the trio of Cahill, Luiz and Azpilicueta are simply undroppable at present.

His arrival would also halt the progression of a number of Chelsea’s young stars, with Nathan Ake, in particular, more than ready to become a regular under Antonio Conte.

New signings are absolutely essential at Chelsea this summer, but defensively? The Blues are just fine.
