Chelsea simply must avoid securing a deal for £27.2m-rated midfielder – here’s why

Reports have linked Man Utd with a move for Chelsea ace Willian, but the Blues in the Transfer Tavern don’t want to see the deal come to fruition…

In fact, for many in the pub – Willian is as important a part in the Chelsea first team as any other player. Take last season, for example. For the most part, the Blues underperformed as they limped to 10th place. Just one player covered themselves in glory, and he would go on to win the in-house Player of the Year award. That player’s name was Willian.

The Brazilian was one of the Premier League’s standout performers, regularly bringing Chelsea back from the dead with last minute equalisers, assists and set pieces. Indeed, he became infamous for his deadly set pieces, scoring a number of remarkable goals in such a manner.

That wasn’t a one season wonder, either. The year prior, when Chelsea won the title, he was again outstanding. Sure, Eden Hazard took the plaudits – but without Willian’s hard work and natural width, Chelsea would have seriously struggled.

Even this season, whilst Willian – who is rated at £27.2m by TransferMarkt – has taken a back seat, he has continued to impress. A double against Tottenham in the FA Cup helped to secure another Wembley trip for the Blues – proving the importance of the Brazilian.

Sure, he might not be a starter at present, and some fans may think that a sale would make sense – but it would be a terrible mistake for Chelsea. No player has proven themselves more than Willian in recent years, and whilst he might not be a starter going forward, there is arguably no better player in Europe to come on and make an impact when called upon.
