This afternoon’s clash between Chelsea and Spurs could have repercussions beyond who is to finish in fourth place. Luca Modric’s future may be at stake.
Chelsea are set to renew their interest in the Croatian midfielder.
Chelsea pursued Modric last summer but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy ensured that he wouldn’t be going anywhere. That seemed like the correct decision with Spurs making an unlikely title challenge and playing the best football in the division.
But everything changed when Fabio Capello resigned as England manager. With Spurs boss Harry Redknapp touted as his likely successor, the period since Capello’s exit has coincided with a dramatic loss of form for the White Hart Lane side.
Losing a 2-0 lead at Arsenal, beaten by Man. United and Everton, and only rescuing a late point at home to Stoke on Wednesday, it’s been a torrid time for Tottenham. With Chelsea now just five points behind them and without a League victory at Stamford Bridge for two decades, today’s clash is being billed as a £50million clash for fourth place.
And Modric’s future could be up for grabs too. With Redknapp likely to leave in the summer, uncertainty reigns over Spurs’ future. Failure to qualify for the Champions League could force them to sell their mercurial playmaker to their London rivals.
