And it could come back to haunt them as Lampard is rumoured to have been offered a short-term deal at a fellow Premier League club.
According to The Mirror, Manchester City are prepared to offer the England international a contract before he links up with New York City.
Widespread rumours report that Lampard’s arrival at New York City is now a formality – despite yet signing the contract.
But Major League Soccer’s newest franchise cannot compete in the league until March 2015 and the former West Ham United midfielder will need somewhere to keep match fit.
New York City are co-owned by Manchester City and they could offer the midfielder a deal until January allowing him to carry on in the Premier League until he moves to America,
Lampard however is reluctant to join another Premier League out of respect to the Chelsea fans.
Manchester City will be keen on the idea of adding Frank Lampard to their ranks as they try to fill their English player quota ahead of the new season.
They currently face a battle to hold onto their homegrown players with James Milner, Gareth Barry, Joleon Lescott, Jack Rodwell and Scott Sinclair all set to quit the club in search of first team football.
