Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are looking slightly disappointed at the claim from the Daily Star.
The publication seem to be under the impression that Blues legend Didier Drogba would have stayed at the club had the right contract been on offer. The former Marseille star of course moved to Shanghai Shenhua in the summer of 2012.
The Galatasaray star enjoyed an emotional return to Stamford Bridge in the Champions League last night and has been linked with a return to the club both as a coach and a player.
However, as one of our punters notes, should the Ivorian forward’s comments be believed, he never needed to leave at all.
Chelsea’s winning goal scorer in the 2012 Champions League Final noted: “Why did I leave Chelsea? I didn’t want to talk about that, but I would have stayed if we could find a satisfactory agreement for both parties.
“Indeed I don’t know how I will react because I never experienced such a come-back, but I am so happy to be back.
“The first leg reminded me of some training-sessions from two or three years ago. Believe me, with John Terry we didn’t do any favours at that time!”
Our regulars make the point that Chelsea have never really recovered up top since the departure of Drogba, and could even now could do with the Ivory Coast international’s goal scoring services – especially given the game against Arsenal on Saturday noon!
