It’s all about Chelsea today in the Tavern, like the delivery of 50,000 packets of pork scratchings we get on Thursdays, we cannot focus on anything else. The Ivorian wide man Salomon Kalou has questioned his future at Stamford Bridge, citing a potential lack of first team opportunities.
Not really surprising news since Carlo Ancelotti has moved for 104 different attacking players in the last few weeks if the wicked rumours around this place are to be believed, it is our friends at Goal.com that bring us the story today.
Kalou signed for Chelsea before the 2006-2007 season for a fee of around £6million from Dutch side Feyenoord. He has played an important part for the Stamford Bridge side ever since and has been used in a multitude of different positions. Sometimes an impact player off the bench, the silky winger has been a good asset to Chelsea.
It now appears however that games are becoming more difficult to come by, currently he is used mostly off the bench. He has appeared in just 11 league games so far this season and the January signing of Fernando Torres has made things even more difficult for the 25 year old. With more reports emerging all the time stating that Carlo Ancelotti and Roman Abramovich are looking to reshape the Chelsea forward line, a future for him at the club seems unlikely. In a recent interview with ESPN he has said:
“It’s been difficult watching from the sidelines these past few weeks….If an opportunity doesn’t come, that’s when you sit down at the end of the season and think about it…Every game it’s possible to make the right decision and it has to be something you’re doing for the good of your own career. You don’t make any decisions by rushing them.”.
Kalou has every right to be frustrated at lack of opportunities, it would be worrying if he wasn’t, and for a player in his position it is normal for him to asses his options. He recognises that the Italian boss is trying to accommodate new signing Torres into the team and the partnership with Anelka has brought results latterly for the side:
“They are all top strikers, but I have to say that if you take the statistics I’m not far from them….I can reach their level, so I have to keep working hard and that’s the only way I will get into the team….The manager knows I can bring something to the team as well. Right now he’s making the choice of Torres and Anelka. It’s working well and we’re winning games, so I have to wait.”.
I personally feel these comments are nothing more than the player looking to jump before he is pushed. Although Kalou claims otherwise I don’t believe he is in the same league as Fernando Torres, Nicolas Anelka or Didier Drogba and whoever comes in this Summer will probably be a better player as well, he has been a superb servant but with these comments I would suggest that the writing is on the wall.
Reports in recent days have suggested that the Chelsea hierarchy have already been looking for suitors for the Ivorian, Galatasaray in the past have had particular interest in the winger and it could be a good move for the player.
There is only one thing surer than a string of players signing for Chelsea this Summer and that is the string of players exiting the club, and it appears highly likely Salomon Kalou could be one of a few!
