There was sadness in the Football Transfer Tavern yesterday as Barcelona legend Carles Puyol announced he would be departing the Camp Nou after 14 glorious seasons at the end of the current season.
The 35-year-old centre back, who has been a rock for Barca and Spain, will leave for pastures new after agreeing to end his contract early due to injury problems.
Of course, talk in the tavern has already turned to who Barca could recruit as they look for as replacement with one name repeatedly mentioned.
The Telegraph report that the La Liga giants could revive their interest in Chelsea’s David Luiz with a bid of around £24 million expected for the Brazilian international.
Luiz has suffered under new Blues boss Jose Mourinho with the former Real Madrid manager preferring to partner John Terry and Gary Cahill in the centre of defence with the ex-Benfica man often employed in a midfield role instead.
Barca reportedly saw an official offer rejected in the summer by Chelsea, but following the arrivals of promising French defender Kurt Zouma and holding midfielder Nemanja Matic – he may be considered as surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.
If Luiz departs Terry, 33, could be offered a further year extension. Although Mourinho insists that the Brazil star, who has also attracted interest from Bayern Munich, still has a future in SW6.
We believe Luiz would be a suitable replacement for Puyol (mainly due to the hair) but what do you think? Let us know your thoughts below.
