Chelsea fans are having a busy day here in the Football Transfer Tavern and after the claims from the Daily Mail, we are not surprised.
The publication has claimed that current Blues number one keeper Petr Cech has nothing to fear from young pretender Thibaut Courtois – at least according to the Czech Republic international himself.
Cech has been in sensational form this season at Stamford Bridge, and has only conceded a single goal in 2014 at home.
Despite a pretty shaky performance from the Chelsea defence against Paris Saint-Germain, the long-serving keeper does not think that his place will be under threat should Courtois return to the club in the summer.
He claimed: “If he comes back and he’s better than me, credit to him, well done to him, but who knows? I’m not afraid. I’m not a fool to think I’ve been here 10 years and I’ll be here another five, just because.
“I am not playing because my name is Petr Cech. I’m playing because I’ve been playing well and because the manager thinks it improves the team with me in goal. I’ve never had a manager who would just put me in the goal because everybody was used to seeing me there.”
As our punters note, bar a couple of errors this term, Cech has been as good as ever. However, we do think that the future for the Blues between the sticks is currently on loan in La Liga after yet another fine display from Courtois against Barcelona in the Champions League for Atletico Madrid this week.
Is Thibaut Courtois far too good to be sitting on Chelsea’s bench next season? Will yet another loan switch be in the pipeline? Let us know your thoughts below.
