Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been mulling over what the club need besides new players to retain their Premier League trophy, and Gary Cahill has identified exactly what’s required.
The Blues won the Premier League during the 2014-15 season but followed that up with a disappointing title defence during the following campaign, finishing on 50 points and in 10th place.
Leicester City followed with the same pattern, winning the 2015-16 campaign in style before ending the next campaign in 12th place on 44 points. Given these two recent examples, punters at the bar donning Chelsea shirts are worried that their side are going to fail at retaining their crown yet again.
However, Cahill has learnt his lesson and says his experience will help younger players and ensure they don’t make similar mistakes.
“The second season after you’re champions is very difficult, we saw that with ourselves and Leicester last year,” Cahill explained to the media in Beijing on Chelsea’s pre-season travels.
“We need extra motivation in the team and we need to work even harder than we did last year. We need to be mindful of the fact that it will be difficult because when you’re champions every other team in the league want to beat you.”
Fans in the Tavern are excited by Alvaro Morata’s recent signing and have been discussing how that is a step in the right direction, but are keen to highlight they need more than just new players.
Hopefully Cahill is right and can prove to their fans that they will not make the same mistake twice.
