Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are breathing a sigh of relief this afternoon after one of their key players ruled out an exit, which has raised the spirits of the Blues supporters at the bar.
The positive news comes via Metro, who quote Cesar Azpilicueta as stating he will be staying put at Stamford Bridge regardless of whether Chelsea turn around their woeful start to the season and land a European football spot next term.
Chelsea’s season was torn apart by a terrible run of form in the first-half of the campaign but under the guidance of Guus Hiddink, who they remain unbeaten under in the Premier League, the Blues have renewed hope of securing a European spot.
However, a top-four finish is still some way off and it’s unlikely Chelsea will sneak into that position- which presents the risk of losing key players this summer, with Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois amongst those linked with an exit.
Fortunately though, full-back Azpilicueta has stated he’s not going anywhere and he sees his long-term future in west London.
‘I count on staying another few years at Chelsea. I’m very happy there – I’m not thinking about leaving the club. I’m only thinking about the Blues.’
‘Marseille made a big impact and gave me the chance to discover Europe. I felt very good over there but if I have to leave it would be for a club where I could develop even more than at Chelsea.’
Our landlord feels this is massive news, as he believes Azpilicueta should be the platform to build a new-look Chelsea defence.
Chelsea fans, how big a deal is this? Will other stars also stay put? Let us know in the comments!
