It’s a story that won’t seem to go away in the Football Transfer Tavern as once again The Daily Star suggests that incoming Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will sell star defender David Luiz to Barcelona for around £30 million.
This rumour has been gathering pace in the last few weeks but the majority of the tavern can’t believe it to be true after Luiz emerged as a key man in Rafael Benitez’s Europa League winning side last season with ensured displays in defence and midfield.
Jose Mourinho is in London and is expected to be confirmed as the new manager at Stamford Bridge later today, with an unveiling planned for tomorrow. The former Real Madrid chief seems to be of the understanding that Luiz does not fit into his strict style of play and is therefore ready to sell him to Barcelona as he seeks to raise cash to help his rebuilding process.
Pep Guardiola and Bayern Munich are also thought to be interested in a possible summer swoop.
Most Blues fans agree that this would be an unwise move by the Portuguese boss however it now looks likely that the 26-year-old’s memorable time at Stamford Bridge could be cut short this summer. It was hoped that the Brazilian would step up to replace John Terry as captain in the next few years but with Jose planning to make his mark at the club this could be but a dream.
Is Mourinho losing his mind? Should Chelsea keep Luiz or is he a defensive risk? Rate this rumour below.
