The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are beginning to get slightly worried about Chelsea’s defensive dilemma this summer…
With John Terry set to leave the club, with no contract renewal announced as of yet, and the Blues not exactly blessed with defensive depth as it is, Antonio Conte certainly has a job on his hands to improve what he has at his disposal.
For the Blues in the pub, then, a reported interest in Real Madrid defender Pepe made a lot of sense.
However, it seems as though the Blues have suffered a pretty big blow in their pursuit of the defender – with the Independent reporting that Real Madrid are to offer him a new deal to stay at the club beyond the end of the season. With interest apparently from across Europe and beyond, Los Blancos are seemingly desperate to ensure that he stays at the club – with a new contract likely forthcoming.
Indeed, this is disappointing for Chelsea in particular, given how well Pepe would likely have slotted in. He has all the experience of John Terry, but whilst the Englishman has struggled for fitness in recent years, Pepe has remained a fairly important part of proceedings at Real Madrid. Offering defensive expertise and powerful aerial ability – he could have been a great option for Conte against a few of the Premier League’s big sides.
Whilst the deal certainly isn’t dead, our landlord thinks that Pepe could find it hard to turn down the offer of an extended stay at Real Madrid if it comes his way.
