For the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, additional midfield depth is absolutely essential…
The Blues have been going well this season, but with N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic starting nearly every game so far – Antonio Conte’s reliance on the duo is clear to see.
They have played pretty frequently for good reason. As a pair, they have been fantastic – but as we reach the business end of the campaign, it appears clear that Antonio Conte simply must look elsewhere for additional depth.
This is where, supposedly, Marcelo Brozovic came in. The Daily Mail reported last month that the Inter Milan midfielder was a target for Conte, with Cesc Fabregas likely to leave.
The 24-year-old midfielder would, of course, have been a pretty ideal target – given how impressive he has been in Serie A as of late.
However, the Blues will seemingly now have to look elsewhere – with Inter Milan confirming on Twitter yesterday that the midfielder had signed a new deal with the club, with the long-term contract now expiring in 2021.

This has come as a blow to the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, many of whom thought Brozovic would be perfect for the Premier League. It must be noted, though, that a new deal does not close the door on the prospect of transfer – but it does seemingly make it far more unlikely.
Nonetheless, with several weeks to go until January – our landlord thinks that Conte still has a lot of time to prepare for the transfer window to re-open.
