The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were relieved to score four goals yesterday in their Premier League match at Brighton and Hove Albion. It was an improvement on their recent goal shy displays. But a new striker is still top of Antonio Conte’s priority list.
Chelsea have recently considered surprise moves for a duo of Premier League target men as Conte eyes a big centre forward with Premier League experience to provide a back up option for the misfiring Alvaro Morata. Michy Batshuayi is likely to leave – at least on loan – if they do find their replacement.
After missing out on Andy Carroll because the West Ham man suffered an injury and after chasing Stoke City’s veteran forward Peter Crouch, Chelsea now have their eyes on Leicester City forward Islam Slimani, according to The Sunday Times.
Slimani is out of favour at Leicester City and could be moved on this window. Chelsea want to sign him on loan and have approached the Foxes about this possible deal.
The Blues face competition from the likes of Watford, Newcastle United and Besiktas for the Algerian international striker. The 29-year-old has eight Premier League goals in 35 appearances but Conte still want Slimani to provide him with a target up front.
Islam Slimani needs to leave Leicester for the sake of his career but he is unlikely to get more game time at Chelsea. The 29-year-old would merely be used as a last resort if Chelsea are trailing and need to fire a ball into the box or if they are winning and need someone to hold the ball up. And this is not the best option for Conte either – he would be better off moving for a physical forward with a better scoring record, such as Edin Dzeko.
