After failed attempts to bring John Stones of Everton and Marquinhos of Paris Saint-Germain to Stamford Bridge in the summer, Chelsea fans were drowning their sorrows in a few too many pints here in the Transfer Tavern; as they have seen their team slump to shock result after shock result.
After Chelsea’s shaky start to the season, which has seen them fall well off the pace at the top of the Premier League, Jose Mourinho is looking for another centre-half to help solidify his leaky defence so they can mount a title charge.
The run has seen skipper and club legend John Terry relegated from the starting line up for the first time under Mourinho and it seems Mourinho has reportedly moved his cross hairs to target Marseille centre back Nicolas N’Koulou as his replacement.
French news outlet L’Equipe reports (Via Talksport) that the Blues will make their move as soon as possible and will submit a bid for the 25-year-old in the January window. The defender’s current deal at Marseille is up next summer, which could mean the the 25-year-old is available in a cut-price deal. The fee Marseille are believed to be holding out for is around £7.2million – which is considerably less than the £40m they reportedly bid for Stones and Marquinhos this summer just gone.
However, Chelsea may have to battle with Arsenal for the defender as they were linked with the player in the summer just been but failed to make a move. However, news of Chelsea’s interest could force them to act.
