Metro seem all about Chelsea today in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that the club have finally signed a back-up goalkeeper this summer.
After seeing bids for Norwich City number one John Ruddy rejected, Jose Mourinho has moved fast and lured Fulham stopper Mark Schwarzer on a one-year deal.
The Australian keeper himself noted that even being second choice at Chelsea was an opportunity that was too good for him to turn down and noted: “It’s a phenomenal club.
“It’s one of the biggest and best clubs in the world, and it’s an honour to sign for Chelsea. I didn’t take much convincing to come here.”
Chelsea of course have been in the hunt for a back-up keeper after Ross Turnbull and Hilario departed this summer while Thibaut Courtois was allowed to go out on loan to Atletico Madrid for a third season in order to gain yet more experience.
Chelsea were fully aware that it would be near on impossible to net a top class keeper given no one will oust Petr Cech from the number one spot and even if they did, there is then Courtois to contend with – an understandable worry for even the best of keepers to have.
