Chelsea fans are looking up with total excitement here in the Football Transfer Tavern as ESPN claim that the club are set to join the race for Barcelona’s highly coveted Thiago Alcantara who has been interesting Manchester United.
As we all know by now, the star of the Under-21 Spanish side will be leaving Barcelona this summer and due to their rather unfortunate miscalculations, his release clause will not be the £77 million the Catalan side hoped for but rather a modest £15.4 million – meaning that a world class player is available for very little money in the modern day market.
The 22-year-old initially hoped to join Bayern Munich and link up with former coach Pep Guardiola yet it now seems that a move to Manchester is the most likely scenario, especially after David De Gea cheekily wrote ‘see you in Manchester’ on the player’s match ball after the final victory against Italy on Tuesday night.
Given the sheer quality of Thiago, it is no shock Jose Mourinho would attempt to make a bid for the player, yet given his relationship with the club Thiago loves, one can only imagine what the player himself thinks of linking up with Mourinho as a manager. As one of our punters quips, Xavi is probably buying Thiago a one way ticket to Manchester as we speak!
Do Chelsea stand a chance of luring Thiago this summer or is he headed for Old Trafford? Let us know your thoughts below.
