Chelsea fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are more than a little bit disappointed after the claims in talkSPORT who note that the Blues will not be landing Palermo’s Slovenian international Josip Ilicic this summer.
The West London club had been thought to be keen on the player who has netted ten times this season and since moving in a £2 million move to Palermo back in 2010, Ilicic has now become a key player for the Sicilian side. However, despite rumours of a move to Chelsea it now seems that another club entirely have raced ahead in negotiations with the player and a move may be about to come off with the player’s agent noting that despite there being interest from English clubs, a move to Roma may be more likely.
Ilicic’s agent claimed to AS Roma Radio: “Negotiations with Roma are well advanced ahead of next season. That’s the most likely option now.
“There were contacts with English clubs, but they were not successful at this time.”
Roma may feel that they have won the battle for the player and Chelsea will be understandably disappointed but for Roman Abramovich not to have gone in all guns blazing it does make some punters here at the tavern wonder if he really wanted the 25-year-old after all.
