Chelsea fans in the Football Transfer Tavern were yesterday left impressed with their latest summer arrival after striker Samuel Eto’o’s signing was confirmed by the club.
Today The Mirror suggest that the Blues could now sell misfit striker Fernando Torres as competition for places hots up at Stamford Bridge.
The Cameroonian international, 32, has signed a one-year deal from Anzhi Makhachkala and now the Blues are ready to listen to offers for the former Liverpool marksman, who was recruited from the Reds in a British record transfer in 2011.
The 29-year-old Spaniard will now have further fallen down the pecking order following Eto’o’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, with impressive Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku slowly emerging ahead of Torres.
Torres will be keen to gain regular football in a World Cup season and a move away could suit all parties with the striker facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho turned to Eto’o, who he worked with at Inter Milan, after struggling in his pursuit for Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney with their Premier League rivals unwilling to sell the 27-year-old this summer.
Eto’o who turned down a counter offer from Inter to move to the SW6 club, said: “I am very happy to be here, but also anxious because I want to play as soon as possible.
“It was a difficult decision. Was very happy with Jose Mourinho before so when the opportunity came, I was very happy to take it.”
Chelsea fans. Given Eto’o has now signed, would you mind if Torres was allowed to leave? Let us know your thoughts below.
