The Man Utd and Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have seen very different levels of success with regards to their respective teams this season…
The Man Utd faithful have seen their team continue to flounder under Jose Mourinho, whilst Antonio Conte has overseen a rapid revolution at Stamford Bridge – with the Blues currently sat atop the Premier League heading into the festive period.
But whilst the sides may be experiencing very different seasons so far, it would appear that their taste in transfers is looking remarkably similar…
According to the Times, Chelsea look set to rival Man Utd for talented Southampton star Virgil van Dijk. The Times are reporting that both Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho have been impressed with the centre-half, with the Dutch defender quickly emerging as one of the Premier League’s finest defenders.
The move makes plenty of sense for both sides, given that both Conte and Mourinho have struggled for defensive depth this season.
Conte has been forced to utilise an out-of-position Azpilicueta alongside a disappointing Cahill and an oddly impressive Luiz for the best part of 2 months, which is a feat that he will struggle to maintain throughout the busy festive period.
Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, has had some serious injury problems – with the likes of Bailly, Jones and Smalling all unavailable at points this season.
For the Man Utd and Chelsea fans in the Tavern, there is a serious dose of optimism that a deal can be struck – but with both sides seemingly ready to splash the cash – our landlord thinks that this one could turn into quite the bidding war.
