There is sensational news breaking in the Football Transfer Tavern as Martin Lipton from The Mirror reports that Chelsea are preparing a new bid for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney after it emerged the England ace is stalling on contract talks.
Only yesterday it was revealed in the tavern that the 28-year-old was yet to enter negotiations with the Old Trafford club despite having only 18 months remaining on his current deal.
And this contract impasse has now put Chelsea on red alert as Jose Mourinho plans another attempt to sign the former Everton forward in the summer as he looks to strengthen his misfiring attack.
The Blues submitted a £24 million bid in the summer that was immediately rejected by United and instead Mourinho sought a stop-gap in three-times Champions League winner Samuel Eto’o.
However Eto’o is set to depart for the MLS after just one season in West London and that means the Stamford Bridge hierarchy are ready to move again for the unsettled Red Devils striker, who has scored 10 goals in 19 appearances for David Moyes’ troubled side this term.
United now risk the possibility of entering the summer, without Champions League football and only 12 months left on Rooney’s contract at Old Trafford, similar to the circumstances that saw Robin van Persie depart Arsenal for the Red Devils in 2012.
This could leave the striker open to Chelsea’s attentions with the Blues firmly believing that they can now finally land their man.
Will Rooney really make his way to Stamford Bridge in the near future? Let us know your thoughts below.
