A Football Transfer Tavern regular popped in earlier and said that The Sun are reporting that Southampton youngster Luke Shaw will sign a new five-year contract with the Saints, when he turns 18 next week.
Shaw had a very impressive debut season for Southampton, making 25 appearances and was regularly linked with a move away from St. Mary’s, with Arsenal and Manchester United rumoured as possible destinations. However it is Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur that are being reported as the Premier League clubs that Shaw will snub.
Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho had wanted to sign the 17-year-old as a long-term replacement for Ashley Cole, whereas Andre Villas-Boas was ready to make Shaw a regular in the side, with various reports suggesting Benoit Assou-Ekotto’s days could be coming to an end at White Hart Lane.
Shaw has already worn the iconic ‘Three Lions’ shirt of England representing the Under-16’s and Under-17’s on various occasions, even notching a goal at each level.
Despite previously admitting he is a Chelsea fan, could Luke Shaw be following in the footsteps of Matthew Le Tissier and rejecting offers of the supposed ‘bigger’ clubs in order to play for the Saints for his whole career? Why not grab a pint and put your feet up in the tavern and hang around to find out.
