The Daily Mail is not the most popular publication here in the Football Transfer Tavern today as they have claimed that Xabi Alonso has signed a new deal at Real Madrid.
The midfielder spent a successful period at Liverpool before moving to the Spanish capital and it seems that he was keen to remain in La Liga after all.
As one of our punters notes, this comes as such a blow to three Premier League clubs in particular, all of whom had designs on the player should he have rejected a new deal with the Spanish giants.
Alonso for his part has managed to secure a significant pay rise and is happy to stay at a club he is clearly wanted and needed at.
As our landlord notes however, that is not much good for Manchester United, Liverpool or Chelsea, all of whom had ideas about brining him to their club.
Despite his age, Alonso is still highly thought of and it is clear that the Spanish international has plenty more to give.
Doubts over his future arose after the departure of Jose Mourinho, not to mention the purchase of Asier Illarramendi, but Alonso has proved his worth since returning from injury.
This of course leaves our English trio searching for a new midfield star.
Who will Chelsea turn to now in their midfield transfer search? Let us know your thoughts below.
