In this instalment of our TT Roundup, Football Transfer Tavern have gathered three of the biggest stories to have involved Chelsea recently and have provided our thoughts on the reports published.
Willian happy under Lampard
Midfielder Willian has affirmed his love for Chelsea, speaking highly of the current regime under Frank Lampard in an interview with the club’s website.
He also credited Lampard with helping him find his decent form of late, with the Brazilian scoring twice in his last three Blues appearances, saying: “He always says to me ‘I want you to be happy’. That’s why I have been playing like I have been.”
Willian had a quiet start to the season, but he and the team now seem to be flourishing as Lampard’s side went level with fourth-placed Leicester City after the recent win over Southampton, in which the 31-year-old bagged an assist.
So life certainly seems good for the Brazilian, who has repeatedly declared his desire to stay at Chelsea despite rumours linking him with moves away, and perhaps he will look to play his way to a new deal, with his current one expiring next summer.
Dzagoev almost became a Blue
According to KraSava (via Sport Witness), CSKA Moscow’s Alan Dzagoev has revealed that he almost joined Chelsea as a youngster – only to be turned down by then-Blues boss Avram Grant.
Dzagoev also alleges that Roman Abramovich also could have helped with a future switch to Stamford Bridge, though the 29-year-old had decided to stay in his homeland, citing it was at a ‘very confusing’ time.
The Russian midfielder has since remained at his boyhood club, where he has won three league titles.
Chelsea may not feel they missed out on Dzagoev given the raft of trophies they claimed around the turn of the decade.
Perhaps a different manager would have seen things differently, but there could be an argument to suggest that Dzagoev – once top scorer at the European Championships – could have flourished in the Premier League.
But with Dzagoev going on to claim a hat-trick of league titles since then, perhaps there is little regret from his side, too.
Sarri eyeing double Blues swoop
Reports from Italian outlet Ilbianconero (via the Daily Express) suggest that Maurizio Sarri is seeking to raid his former club as he looks to bolster his Juventus squad.
Citing Ilbianconero, the Daily Express claims that Sarri wants Emerson Palmieri and N’Golo Kante to join him in Turin.
However, it is thought that both players would be difficult to prise away from Stamford Bridge, with Palmieri said to have entered talks over a new deal, while Kante is reportedly ‘untransferable’.
While any January deals for the duo would seem extremely unlikely given Chelsea’s existing transfer ban, the amount of time that would have to pass before the Blues may realistically consider any forthcoming proposals from Juventus allows for plenty to change in the meantime.
Reports of a new contract for Emerson would surely take Sarri off the scent of his former player, while the £90m-rated Kante (as per Transfermarkt) would likely command a huge outlay from the Serie A giants.
Therefore, it seems as though at this moment in time, both deals currently look unlikely.
Chelsea fans, would you offer Willian a new deal? Would signing Dzagoev have been a success? And how much would you sell Kante for – if at all? Join the discussion in the comments below!
