Some surprise speculation has just reached us in the Football Transfer Tavern today with Metro suggesting that Chelsea are preparing to make a bid for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke with the Belgian also interesting London rivals Tottenham this summer.
This is the first we have heard of any interest from Stamford Bridge for the Belgian marksman who enjoyed such an impressive first season in the Premier League with the West Midlands side.
Benteke, 22, struck 19 Premier League goals for Villa to help pull the Villans away from relegation and this has attracted interest in the powerful frontman from English rivals.
Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool have all been linked to a summer move for the former Genk man while Spanish club Atletico Madrid are also thought to be considering a transfer.
However Jose Mourinho is now understood to want Benteke as he looks to add reinforcements in attack for his new Blues side. The former Real Madrid manager had been chasing Napoli striker Edinson Cavani but looks set for disappointment with the Uruguayan looking destined to sign for Paris Saint-Germain.
He has now switched attention back to England as he seeks a striker able to lead the line alone and Benteke fits the remit. Villa are thought to want over £20 million for the player who would love to feature in the Champions League next season.
Is Benteke the sort of striker Mourinho should be trying to sign? Let us know your thoughts below.
