Chelsea vs Barca: The Chelsea Player Ratings

Boy did the Chelsea boys do us proud! Despite giving up more than majority of the posession to Barcelona we defended with a dogged determination, tactical know-how and fighting spirit reminisent of the Jose Mourinho days.

Every player played his part in a team performance which will surely go down in history as one of the best collective performances ever. Barcelona may have missed their chances but Chelsea’s defensive brilliance also denied them what looked like certain goals.

Cech = 9 Made the saves he needed too when Chelsea’s defence was breached and showed his class with his save from Puyol’s header.

Ivanovic = 9 Showed why he is one of the best right backs not only in the Premier League but in the world. Didn’t put a foot wrong and defended brilliant against Barcelona’s movement.

Cahill = 9 This will always go down as the day Cahill came of age at Chelsea. For a player who was at Bolton fighting for relegation before christmas he showed his pure defensive ability and looks a great partner for JT.

Terry = 10 He gets an extra point for leading the back four which was like a fortress which Barca struggled to breach. Showed the doubters he is a must for Euro 2012.

Cole = 9 Finally we have seen the old Ashley Cole of his Arsenal and early Chelsea days. Great goal-line clearance and only lost Sanchez once when he hit the bar, still showed an attacking threat.

Mikel = 9 Never thought I’d being saying Mikel kept Barcelona’s midfield quiet. With the help of his team-mates Mikel put in the performance of his life. Excellent.

Lampard = 9 Never been well known for his defensive work but Lampard has shown in recent months under RDM he is capable of changing his game and perhaps (hopefully) prolonging his Chelsea career.

Meireles = 8 Probably the only player who looked a little out of place. Did offer great energy and work-rate but was lucky to escape a yellow card and passing was very poor.

Mata = 8 Despite showing very little in attack he rarely got a chance to use the ball. For a player who is known as a ball player he showed amazing commitment to the cause to do so much defensive work.

Drogba = 9 Faded in and out of the game but it is very tough up front on your own when your team don’t have the ball. Scored the winner and looked a constant threat against Puyol, also did his fair share of defending.

Ramires = 9 Great energy and engine, never stops running. Set up the winning goal and defended brilliantly as did everyone.

Subs:

Kalou = 8 Defended well but offered little when he got on the ball. No doubt he looks a better payer under RDM than AVB.

Bosingwa = 7 Now it’s no secret I’m not a fan of Bosingwa and the players jobs definately doubled when he came on again.
