Here in the Football Transfer Tavern we always hold ambitions to see the return of former heroes to the Premier League and the latest rumour in the bar has caused much excitement.
Today’s Metro has suggested that Chelsea have emerged as a possible destination for Xabi Alonso if he decides to leave Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer.
Jose Mourinho is reportedly looking for a reunion with the Spanish international, who he managed during his three years in La Liga, at Stamford Bridge.
And it appears that the former Real boss could make his move for Alonso in January as he looks to get him signed up on a pre-contract deal.
The midfielder’s long-term future in Madrid appears bleak after the club signed Asier Illarramendi from Real Sociedad, who many in the tavern view as the perfect replacement for the one-time Sociedad man. This competition for places has made Alonso consider his position at the club and he could be ready to walk away from Los Blancos on a free transfer.
He has yet to play for club or country this season after being hampered by injuries, but may return to the fold shortly having returned to training this month but possibly in his final games for the La Liga outfit.
Mourinho is understood to be planning a three-year contract for the ex-Liverpool man even though it goes against his policy of not offering players over 30 longer than a one-year contract with the likes of Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and summer signing Samuel Eto’o all falling under this self-imposed rule.
The Blues could yet face competition from Alonso’s former club Liverpool while Juventus have also been linked with a move for the 31-year-old.
