There’s a few sore heads in the Football Transfer Tavern this morning after last night’s festive beers but punters are awoken from their drunken state with shock news that Chelsea are lining up a swoop for Tottenham’s Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
With Ashley Cole set to depart in the summer on a free transfer, Chelsea need a new left back and according to Mirror Football journalist Matt Law, who is enjoying a full English at the bar, the Blues are ready to test the waters with a £6 million bid in the January transfer window.
Chelsea have youngster Ryan Bertrand ready to step up into Cole’s boots next season but there is a feeling at the club that he would benefit from competition for his place and the Spurs man has been targeted as a transfer option.
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has already found a suitable replacement for Assou-Ekotto after Jan Vertonghen impressed when the Cameroon international missed the start of the season due to a troublesome knee injury.
The 28-year-old was in fine form for the White Hart Lane outfit last season but he could be looking for a fresh challenge and a transfer across London could work for both parties.
