Metro have made a claim that has both Chelsea and Manchester United fans putting down their pints and looking up with interest here in the Football Transfer Tavern.
The publication carry the story that Jose Mourinho has admitted there is no rush to land Wayne Rooney this summer.
The Chelsea manager has been a long-term fan of the player and has stepped up the chase for the England international this summer, much to the annoyance of Manchester United and new manager David Moyes, who we all know has endured plenty of issues with Rooney in the past.
Given that Mourinho only has the likes of Demba Ba and Fernando Torres at his disposal and the promising but still very young Romelu Lukaku, as one of our punters notes, it is not a shock he has moved for the tried and tested Rooney to lead his line next season.
Thus far, United have been firm on the fact they will not sell the forward to a title rival club but Mourinho has now noted that: “There is no time limit.
“We have our squad of strikers. We have identified the player as one we would look to have with us.
“We are doing things legally, making the official bid directly to the club, no interviews or comments or direct relations with the player, no contact, absolutely nothing.
“We have done it in an ethical way and we are going to do that until the last day. And we will see how it comes.”
