Chelsea would find much-needed defensive stalwart in £36m-rated defender – agreed?

Chelsea’s defence has been problematic this season, with Antonio Conte struggling to make the most of his trusted five-man defence at Stamford Bridge.

It’s tough to put all of the blame on Conte, though. He can only work with what he’s got, and it’s fair to say that a plethora of players have underperformed this season, particularly in the defence.

The likes of Gary Cahill, Andreas Christensen and even Antonio Rudiger have been at fault at points this term, and that’s a problem for the Blues. This summer, then, bringing in another option makes sense, and Tottenham ace Toby Alderweireld could be the perfect solution. Significantly, according to the Mirror, Spurs are ready to listen to offers for him.

Rated at £36 million by Transfer Markt, the Belgian has been one of Europe’s most consistent defenders in recent years. In a defence alongside Jan Vertonghen, he’s been outstanding, and that partnership has been crucial to the Lilywhites’ rise of the last few years.

He’s got fantastic technical ability, he’s very solid in the air, and most important of all, he is a simply brilliant tackler. Collectively, then, he’s one of the Premier League’s best, and there’s no doubting that he would be an upgrade on Chelsea’s current choices.

Significantly, he’s also proven in the Premier League, and the Blues would struggle to find a player of his quality that provides that level of proven ability. This would mean that he would need no adjustment period, and that immediate impact is what the Blues need.

Alderweireld would likely be an expensive choice, both with regards to his transfer cost and his wages, but for the Blues, he’d be the perfect solution to their defensive problems.
