Chelsea would seriously challenge for the title again if they landed £67.5m-rated hero

Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are glad their season didn’t end without a trophy after lifting the FA Cup at Wembley.

Despite lifting the trophy following a 1-0 win over Manchester United, manager Antonio Conte is facing the sack following a poor performance in the Premier League. After winning the title so comfortably last season, the Blues could only finish fifth therefore missing out on Champions League football. Napoli boss, Maurizio Sarri, is the favourite to take over.

Chelsea’s poor business in the summer transfer window allowed City to storm to the title. Arguably their worst signing was Alvaro Morata who arrived from Real Madrid for a club-record £56m. Following a dismal first campaign where his misses have gained more notoriety than his goals, he could be set for the axe.

To replace him, Chelsea must try to lure Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan. The Argentine is one of the best finishers in the world and has netted a remarkable 29 goals in 34 appearances in the Serie A this season; hitting the back of the net every 102 minutes. His exceptional goal scoring ability has seen his market value shoot up to £67.5m according to Transfermarkt.

An expert in finding space in behind and making smart runs, the likes of Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas would complement Icardi perfectly. And at just 25-years-old, he is yet to hit his prime. Luring him from Inter could prove challenging but after his snub for Argentina’s World Cup squad, he may feel he needs to move to a bigger club to boost his chances.

If Chelsea could bring him to Stamford Bridge, he would be their best signing in years.

Chelsea fans, thoughts?
