Chelsea supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are still downcast after their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester City yesterday but news emerging from James Dickenson of the Express that the club are close to completing the signing of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Andre Schurrle has brought a smile back to their faces.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has been continuously linked with a move to England and Stamford Bridge despite the club not yet appointing a successor to interim boss Rafael Benitez for the new season.
Schurrle, who has 22 caps for Germany, was the subject of two bids from Roman Abramovich last summer but it now appears that the forward will finally be moving to the Bridge with a possible £20 million transfer fee discussed.
According to reports, representatives of the German outfit were actually at Wembley yesterday to thrash out a deal and the English club are likely to have the signing wrapped up soon with just personal terms to agree.
The Blues face a fresh start next season with a new manager and a few new signings and La Liga star Radamel Falcao is known to be high on the agenda in a £45 million move although it now appears that Schurrle will be the first recruit of the summer transfer window.
Is Schurrle really Chelsea’s first signing of the summer? Rate this rumour below.
