The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are almost in disbelief at how badly their season turned out which resulted in the Blues missing out on the Champions League places for the second time in three seasons.
Unbelievably it was near-enough the same team that won the league in the 2016/17 season. This all came down to who Chelsea signed and also who they let go, which has really proven to sting them on more than one occasion. Making sure this doesn’t happen again, Ruben Loftus-Cheek should be seen as an extremely capable player who has the potential to start in the Chelsea team right now.
With his valuation set at £7.2 million, his one-year loan at Crystal Palace proved alone that he could be a player worth 10x that amount based on a number of eye-catching performances he put in for the Eagles. The 22-year-old has recently been called up to the England World Cup squad, largely because of his dominance in midfield, his willingness to drive at defenders and also because Loftus-Cheek has a good eye for a killer pass or a lovely goal.
The midfield has been one of Chelsea’s big problems this season with signings such as Tiemoue Bakayoko, Ross Barkley and Danny Drinkwater all doing little to suggest that they’re future Blues heroes. In fact, their performances so far suggest quite the opposite.
The rise to prosperity that Ruben Loftus-Cheek has shown this season is the number one reason why Chelsea must not only keep him permanently but also utilise him as it’s clear to see the enforcing midfielder has a lot to offer at Stamford Bridge.
