£6.3m-rated Brighton man should be seen as ideal replacement for Chelsea’s Gary Cahill

Chelsea fans in the Tavern are desperately hoping for a successful summer transfer window in order to propel themselves to the helm of the Premier League once again.

Defensive mistakes upon other factors have limited the success for Antonio Conte’s players, having been knocked out of the Carabao Cup and suffering poor form in the Premier League.

This has consequently meant they find themselves a long way adrift of runaway leaders Manchester City.

David Luiz has struggled to replicate the performances he managed last season and the seemingly reliable Andreas Christensen made a costly mistake against Barcelona, allowing Lionel Messi to score his first goal against the Blues. Furthermore, Gary Cahill in particular has struggled this season with his bad form potentially ruining his chances of travelling with England to the world cup.

An English defender that has been rather good this season however is Brighton’s Lewis Dunk. (Valued at £6.3 million according to Transfermarkt)

Dunk, a Chelsea fan himself, has impressed for the Seagulls this season by helping his side claim four clean sheets in the Premier League as well as bringing strong leadership qualities to their backline. It is no surprise that over the last 8 years he has led the defence with the armband wrapped around him.

With Gary Cahill not getting any younger, it may be time that Chelsea look to offload the 32-year-old and replace him with someone who has proved this season to have what it takes to be a top-class defender in the top flight of English football.

Chelsea fans at the bar seem to be wanting the bigger named internationals within their ranks but as a long-term replacement for Gary Cahill, Lewis Dunk might not be the best defender in the league but lining up next to better quality defenders at Chelsea could seem his game flourish to the next level.
