Having watched their side extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to eight points yesterday, the Chelsea fans celebrating in the Transfer Tavern are feeling rather formidable right now.
It was a stunning return to first-team action for Blues star Diego Costa, of course, who had been left out of the last game following suggestions there was a big money big from China on the table. With the Spaniard in such wonderful form this season, it’s fair to say our west London locals are happy he looks like staying in SW6.
Still, reports from the Times over the course of the weekend really are rather interesting indeed. They claim that, while the league leaders reportedly slapped a £130m price tag on the 28-year-old, top brass at Stamford Bridge are thought to have been open to a sale this month.
That figure would obviously represent a world record fee, though it’s further claimed that the Spanish forward’s representatives warned the former Atletico Madrid man against a move to the Far East at this stage of his career. Despite the lucrative wages on offer in the Chinese Super League, his camp are believed to have told him to steer clear for now.
