New Real Madrid manager Julen Lopetegui has Marcos Alonso on his transfer hit list according to Don Balon, but he should stay put and see through the Chelsea revolution.
Alonso has been a big hit at Chelsea since he signed from Fiorentina for £24m and was integral to their Premier League-winning campaign in 2016/17, but since then Chelsea have lost their way. A lack of Champions League football at the Bridge must be playing on the minds of their top players, and that now includes Alonso.
Alonso was part of Real Madrid’s youth academy, playing 39 times for Madrid B but only once for the first team before his move to Bolton in 2010. The prospect of proving himself at his boyhood club, while playing for one of the biggest teams in the world will certainly be attractive, but he should stay at Chelsea and help build Sarri’s vision.
The Ex-Napoli man is known for his Guardiola-like, exciting football where possession and passing out from the back is key, and Alonso fits this vision perfectly. He’s a versatile defender able to step out into midfield to start atttacks, while he also reacts calmly to pressure, which is useful when facing a high press.
Like Guardiola’s first season, Sarri may take time to impliment his style and results may look poor at times during this campaign, but Alonso should stick by his manager and build himself into a world-class defender in the Premier League.
The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, and leaving now would be poor timing.
