Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern will be disappointed to learn the news of star midfielder N’Golo Kante’s injury that will keep him out of The Blues’ trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
The France international sustained a hamstring strain in his nation’s World Cup qualifying win over Bulgaria at the weekend and will be unavailable when Chelsea take on a beleaguered Palace side, The Guardian reports.
Still, the Eagles are without a point or a goal in the Premier League this season so it is not the most difficult assignment for Antonio Conte’s men and Kante’s defensive contribution will not be as essential as in their previous match against Manchester City, for example- they lost that 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.
It is the long-term impact of the former Leicester City player’s absence that is most alarming for The Blues fans at the bar. Having won the title with The Foxes in 2016, he repeated the feat at Chelsea the following year and his accomplishments have now stretched to a Ballon d’Or nomination.
He is an integral member of the starting eleven and whilst he isn’t expecting to feature at Selhurst Park, the full extent of injury reportedly remains unknown until he returns to Chelsea’s Cobham training ground and undergoes the necessary medical tests.
This is, of course, a big problem for the Blues – with Kante an ever-present in the midfield thus far this term. With no other player offering the defensive stability of the Frenchman, it’s going to take all of Antonio Conte’s defensive nouse to get the job done this weekend.
Still, Crystal Palace are a very beatable opponent, and so the fans in the Transfer Tavern aren’t too concerned.
Chelsea do have options in the middle of the park, with the duo of Cesc Fabregas and Tiemoue Bakayoko likely to step in if Kante is unavailable.
It won’t be a massive issue against Palace, but in the coming weeks – with more important games on the horizon – the Blues will be hoping that their midfield lynchpin is available.
