Having failed with bids to sign both Gregory van der Wiel, of Ajax, and Fábio Coentrão (who impressed for Portugal during the World Cup), of Benfica, the German champions are reputedly turning their attention to the English market.
Of course, Coentrão played at left-back for his country, testament to the belief that Bayern really are in dire need of some all-round defensive reinforcement, particularly given defensive stalwart Philip Lahm’s recent declaration that he would like to play abroad one day.
Liverpool’s Glen Johnson has been muted as a potential target, particularly in light of the very public negative comments his manager has made about him recently, yet reports in the German newspaper “Bild” today have named Jose Bosingwa as Bayern’s “new top-candidate”.
For the general German public, the Chelsea man is described as a pacey defender who is just as strong going forward as he is in defence. A figure of about €12m (£10m) would apparently be enough to land Bosingwa, whose current contract with Chelsea expires next year.
However, with the news today that captain John Terry may be out for several months, can Chelsea afford to lose any more defenders?
