Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern can’t wait to put last season’s disappointment behind them with a strong transfer window.
The Blues missed out on Champions League football after finishing fifth in the Premier League standings. Antonio Conte paid the price for a disappointing transfer window on the back of winning the title so comfortably in his first year. Chelsea failed to strengthen the right areas and allowed Manchester City to cruise to the trophy.
Whoever is in charge of the Blues this summer needs to avoid making the same mistake. Big-money additions of both Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley have not worked out, and Alvaro Morata has failed to impress since his record-breaking move from Real Madrid. Chelsea need to get back on track by landing one of the World Cup’s top performers.
CSKA Moscow’s Aleksandr Golovin has been one of the stars of the tournament, helping hosts Russia progress from the group stage and knock out Spain to reach the final eight of the competition. Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the 22-year-old has scored one goal and notched two assists in three appearances.
Golovin made 26 appearances in the Russian Premier League last season, scoring five goals and registering three assists – he could prove to be an excellent addition to the Blues midfield. He loves to take the defender on but also contributes defensively making him perfectly suited to the Premier League.
At just 22, he has plenty of time to improve his game and develop into a Premier League star.
